Adopt a Fire Hydrant
Adopt a fire hydrant and help us protect you!
No need to feed, clothe or house it. All you need to do to keep it happy is clear the snow around it after every storm.
If your home or business catches fire, every second counts. Firefighters lose precious seconds if they have to clear snow from the hydrant near your property.
You can adopt a hydrant on your own or with your neighbours and take turns clearing the snow around your “protégé.”
Hydrants don’t like to feel smothered! Clear a space 1 m by 1 m (3 ft x 3 ft) around the hydrant after each snowfall, and make sure it is easy to access.
City employees clear snow from the municipality’s 1,554 fire hydrants but not systematically after every snowfall. Snow removal around fire hydrants is done on a priority basis and in cooperation with the fire department, so there’s a good reason to adopt a hydrant and protect your neighbourhood.
To find out how many fire hydrants are adopted, send us the number of the hydrant you have chosen for the winter by filling out this form.
We appreciate the help!
