Exterior Commercial Signage
Bylaw Z-22 stipulates that no exterior commercial sign can be built, erected, displayed, altered or relocated unless it meets the following requirements:
- The text must appear in both official languages.
- The style of lettering must be identical in both English and French.
- French must be displayed first.
Exceptions:
- Company names can be unilingual.
- Unilingual signs are allowed for cultural and educational organizations but require permission from City Council.
Note that this bylaw does not apply to signs placed before May 25, 2010, unless changes are being made. The addition of a language other than English or French is also permitted.
I am a business owner and want to change an existing sign. What do I need to do?
Contact the City's Planning and Development Department and fill out a permit request form, just as you would for a construction project.
I have an electronic billboard. Do I have to apply for a permit every time I want to change the text?
Electronic billboards, display boards and panels, and advertising panels are exempt. For more information, contact the Planning and Development Department at 506.877.7855.
