This message is from the Dieppe Fire Department
Following the recent snowstorms, the Fire Prevention, Inspection and Investigation Division would like to share these important fire safety tips.
Due to the amount of snow we’ve received over the past few days, it is important to clear snow around dryer vents and any gas operated appliances such as a furnace, stove or fireplace. Vents that are blocked by snow can cause Carbon Monoxide (CO) to accumulate inside the home and result in serious illness or death and can cause appliances to overheat and start a fire.
Ensure all doors of your home are cleared from snow to ensure you can get out in case of a fire. Make sure all windows are not frozen if ever you need to use these as an escape mechanism.
If you are an apartment building owner or manager, check for snow accumulations around exit doors, stairways and fire escapes so that occupants have safe ways out in an emergency.
Also, the «Adopt a Fire Hydrant» program assists firefighters in locating and clearing the hydrants faster during a fire emergency where every second counts. Municipal employees remove snow from Dieppe's 1,352 fire hydrants; however, this is not done systematically after each snowfall. Following a major storm, 96 hours may pass before all fire hydrants are cleared. This is a good reason to adopt your nearby fire hydrant and protect your neighborhood. Remember, fire safety starts at home.
