Sister Cities
The City of Dieppe has two sister cities: Dieppe, France, and Carencro, Louisiana.
Dieppe, France
Both Dieppes declared themselves sister cities in April 2000. Their alliance holds historical significance, since Dieppe, Canada, was named in honour of the devastating raid carried out in Dieppe, France, on August 19, 1942.
In addition, in 1604, Samuel de Champlain left Upper Normandy, where Dieppe, France, is located, to establish the first French settlement in Acadia. Our francophone culture, which has been passed on by our ancestors and constitutes a pillar of our identity as a city, is another feature that we share with our twin city in France.
Exchanges have been taking place for several years between both Dieppes to promote knowledge sharing and to bring the two communities closer together. Anniversaries marking the Dieppe raid are also an opportunity to commemorate the event, which forever unites the history of Canada and France. And finally, the Cenotaph at Place 1604 contains pebbles brought back by students from beaches in Dieppe, France.
Carencro, Louisiana
The cities of Dieppe and Carencro, Louisiana, proclaimed themselves sister cities in 1989. Given the culture that unites Acadians and Cajuns, the purpose of the twinning is to facilitate the sharing of traditions, lifestyles and knowledge specific to both regions, which share a common heritage.
