Ceremony to commemorate Dieppe Raid
DIEPPE, N.B. – The Dieppe War Veterans Association and the City of Dieppe are hosting a ceremony to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the Dieppe Raid on Sunday, August 18, at Place 1604.
The raid, the most devastating of the Second World War, took place on August 19, 1942, on the beaches of Dieppe in Normandy, France. The losses were enormous for Canada: 913 soldiers died while 2,000 others became prisoners of war.
In 1946, once the war had ended, the municipality formerly known as Leger’s Corner in New Brunswick adopted the name “Dieppe” to honour the memory of the Canadian soldiers who died on the beaches of France.
The ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. in front of the veterans’ monument with a parade of veterans and military personnel, members of the RCMP, as well as cadets. Following the ceremony, a reception will be held at the Club d’âge d’or de Dieppe, 445 Acadie Avenue.
In case of rain, the event will take place at the Club d’âge d’or de Dieppe.
