Scholarship awarded
DIEPPE, N.B. — To mark Disability Awareness Week, the City of Dieppe awarded its first scholarship intended for a Dieppe resident living with a disability.
The $1,000 scholarship was presented to Simon Richard on May 26. Mr. Richard is a young Dieppe resident living with aniridia, a condition that results in a significant reduction in his vision. He will graduate from Dieppe’s École Mathieu-Martin in June and is registered in the business administration program (concentration in accounting) at the Université de Moncton this fall.
Very active in sports, he is a member of the National Junior Goalball Team. Last summer, he proudly represented Canada at the World Junior Championships in addition to being a substitute player at the Pan American Games. He also took part in tryouts in an effort to secure a place on Canada’s Senior Team that will be taking part in the Paralympic Games in London this summer.
In addition to being an athlete with high academic marks, he is a dedicated volunteer who is greatly appreciated by a number of community organizations that have played a very important role in this personal and athletic development.
This scholarship is provided annually to a Dieppe resident living with a disability and who is pursuing – or plans to pursue – post-secondary studies.
