Dandelion madness
DIEPPE, NB — In May, City of Dieppe residents are asked not to mow their lawn or to at least leave part of their lawn unmowed. The idea behind this movement, which is starting to gain momentum in Canada, is to help pollinating insects, including butterflies and bees. Food is scarce for these insects in May and dandelions are one of the few flowers that can provide them with nectar.
To join the movement, for the entire month of May, the City will suspend enforcement of its street and sidewalk bylaw that stipulates that grass must be less than 20 cm high and will not mow grass at City Hall. Increasing the number of flowers and nectar will help pollinators.
Residents who wish to participate can send a photo of their unmowed lawn to info@dieppe.ca by June 7 at 11:59 p.m. for a chance to win a basket of honey and honey-based products.
