Affordable Housing: Dieppe Wishes to be Part of the Solution
DIEPPE, NB — Dieppe City Council adopted an affordable housing incentive policy at its public meeting on July 10, 2023. An initial envelope of over $250,000 will be available for grants targeting new affordable housing units, up to an amount equivalent to the development and building permit costs collected by the City.
Eligibility
The policy will use the same affordable housing criteria as various provincial and federal government funding programs. For a project to qualify, at least 30% of the new rental units must be affordable. Projects must also receive funding from a provincial or federal program, and pre-approval under this policy may be used to access funds from provincial or federal governments. Grant amounts will depend on the ratio of affordable housing units created by the project. The policy is retroactive to January 1, 2023, so projects undertaken since that date can apply for the grant. The policy applies only to new housing units. Conversion or renovation projects of existing dwellings are not eligible.
A first step
“This policy was designed to be fast and effective. It allows the City of Dieppe to contribute to solutions for more affordable housing options,” says Charles-Éric Landry, an urban planner with the City of Dieppe.
A study of Dieppe’s housing needs has also been launched and will lead to the development of a housing strategy. This will be used to improve the current policy and implement targeted measures. It will enable the City to continue densifying its downtown core, develop its cultural life and become the destination of choice for French-speaking immigrants to the Atlantic region.
