Dieppe firefighters set to practice water rescue
DIEPPE (NB) — The Dieppe Fire Department (DFD) is not only trained to fight fires but also in various other possible emergency situations. On Monday, June 1 and Wednesday, June 3, DFD firefighters working in teams of three will perform water rescues using a 185 lbs life-like dummy in the Petitcodiac River.
«This is part of a mandatory training, said Jeff Pyke, Captain of training with DFD. It`s important to know the best way of rescuing someone in the water without risk to those carrying out the rescue. We will practice a number of rescue scenarios which we might be called to attend in the future.»
Firefighters will train to perform rescues whether the victim is conscious or not and others will be on deck to assist with the rescue.
Over the course of the two days, 40 firefighters will put on special suits and get into the water for practice between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days.
This exercise is part of ongoing training. Firefightersare provided with advanced, refresher, and re-certification training on fire suppression, emergency medical services first response, vehicle extraction, technical rescue, and dangerous goods response.
