Intergenerational Centre Construction Contract Awarded to Pomerleau
DIEPPE – During its public meeting on September 10, the Dieppe City Council awarded a $30,590,000 contract to Pomerleau Inc., for the construction of the new intergenerational complex that will bear the name of its main sponsor, UNI.
This award means that the work will begin this fall and should be completed in the fall of 2020.
"It's excellent news, and we are very happy to reach this stage. The project is ever closer to becoming a reality, and we are delighted that we will soon be able to offer modern infrastructure that meets the needs expressed by our community," explained Mayor Yvon Lapierre.
Because of the instability in the construction materials market during the past year, the initial project cost estimate, which was $29,000,000, had to be reviewed.
"Between the time when we made our business plan and today, the tariff on iron increased by 30% and the tariff on wood between 25% and 28%. We had to resign ourselves to making some changes to our initial plan, but I am very happy that we were able to keep all of the components requested by the community," added Mayor Lapierre.
The cost of the scenographic and other equipment such as the signboard, furniture, and the audio system, therefore brings the total cost of the project to $31,650,000.
The project will be funded by the provincial government ($7,250,000), the federal government ($9,575,632), the municipality ($10,574,368) and the community ($4,250,000).
"Despite the increase in the project's cost, we have managed not to increase our loan, which remains at $3.5 million," said Mayor Lapierre.
The complex will include an indoor walking track, a community kitchen, community rooms that can accommodate up to 150 people, a primary ice surface with about 1,000 seats, a secondary ice surface with about 300 seats, and an intergenerational greenhouse.
