Government of Canada investing $380,000 to restore the Doiron House
DIEPPE, NB — The City of Dieppe is pleased to announce that the Government of Canada is investing $380,000, to be matched by the City, to restore the Doiron House.
This ancestral Acadian home was built by Joseph Doiron in 1841 and passed down from generation to generation. The City of Dieppe acquired the Doiron House in 2015 with the goal of making the exceptional heritage of this house accessible to the community and sharing its history.
The funding from the Government of Canada was obtained under the Legacy Fund, whose goal is to develop communities through arts and heritage.
“Our government is proud to help make the Joseph Doiron House a must-see attraction for Dieppe and its surrounding areas,” says the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament, Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe. “This restoration project of one of the absolute treasures of our region will leave a lasting artistic and cultural legacy. It will help us shine a light on arts and culture within our region while also providing a chance for our local artists to participate in the life of their community.”
The unique architectural features of the Doiron House make it a heritage treasure for Dieppe. These include the original brick hearth, woodwork and doors, and numerous items that belonged to its different owners.
“The Doiron House is a very important piece of Acadian material heritage,” mentions the Mayor of the City of Dieppe, Yvon Lapierre. It has enormous potential, and we are immensely proud to take on this project to transform it into a lively, animated space.”
In the long term, the City of Dieppe plans to create a performance space in the barn attached to the building and offer ancestral-themed activities such as Acadian cooking classes, theatre, and guided tours of the house. There will also be a bistro in the basement with an outdoor patio.
