Dieppe Aims to Cut GHG Emissions by 50%
The City of Dieppe recently presented the results of its greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory and set an emission reduction target of 50% by 2031.
50% reduction target
The municipality aims to halve its GHG emissions by 2031, including not only those produced by the City, but also the community. The 50% target is not insignificant, given that municipalities are responsible for nearly half of Canada’s GHG emissions. Municipalities can influence the quantity of emissions they generate by the way they conduct development activities and offer services. For example, neighbourhoods with higher housing density, a mix of commercial spaces and access to public transit produce fewer per-capita emissions than residential neighbourhoods, where car dependency is a major contributor to GHG emissions.
On the right track
GHG emissions are down in Dieppe compared to 2013, despite significant population growth (+21%). However, the decline is partly attributable to COVID-19, so it’s important to stay vigilant and committed in the fight against climate change. Emissions could increase over the next few years as a result of population growth and increased economic activity.
“The City remains committed to acting responsibly from an environment standpoint and is following targets set by climate experts,” says Alexandre Truchon-Savard, environment director for the municipality. “We want to take concrete action to cut our greenhouse gas emissions in half. We’re also counting on residents to help us reach that goal.”
