Dieppe Presents Housing Strategy
DIEPPE, NB — Like many municipalities in New Brunswick and across Canada, the City of Dieppe is facing housing challenges. Access to housing has declined sharply in recent years, and a significant number of residents are having difficulty finding housing that meets their needs.
With those challenges in mind, the municipality conducted a housing needs assessment to better understand recent, current and future market conditions. The assessment quantified the housing shortage in relation to growth and also revealed a shortage of non-market housing, i.e., housing generally geared to low-income individuals and families.
With the help of experts in the field, the City developed its very first Housing Strategy. The strategy identifies specific actions the City can take to address its housing challenges. It focuses on a manageable number of measures that can have a significant impact in relation to the resources they require, taking into account the responsibilities and limitations of municipal governments.
“The strategy outlines four main actions that can be undertaken to help increase the availability and affordability of housing,” says Charles-Éric Landry, an urban planner with the City. “Processes can be improved, for example, to make the creation of new homes less costly and risky. We’re also looking at offering a navigation service to facilitate access to federal and provincial affordable-housing subsidies, all with a view to facilitating the creation of housing.”
The strategy also proposes enhancing the affordable housing incentive program created by the municipality in 2023 and forging specific partnerships to stimulate projects in the non-market housing sector.
Adoption of the strategy will be on the agenda of the regular Council meeting slated for Monday, July 8. Click here for a summary of the strategy.
