Passing of former mayor William “Bill” Malenfant
DIEPPE, NB — It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of William “Bill” Malenfant, former councillor and mayor of Dieppe, and former provincial MLA.
Mr. Malenfant had a long career in the municipal sector. He first served as town councillor from 1969 to 1971, before being elected mayor for the first time in 1971.
He was re-elected for seven more terms as mayor in 1973-1974, 1974-1977, 1983-1986, 1986-1989, 1989-1992, 1992-1995 and finally 1995-1998.
“The years where Mr. Malenfant served as mayor were very prosperous in terms of social, economic and cultural development, with numerous projects seeing the light of day”, says Mayor Yvon Lapierre.
William Malenfant was also involved in municipal politics as Liberal MP between 1974 and 1982.
In addition to his municipal involvement, Mr. Malenfant was also a volunteer firefighter with the Dieppe Fire Department from 1946 to 1971 and a member or volunteer with several organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, the Royal Canadian Legion, the Veterans Appeal Committee, the Club d’âge d’or de Dieppe and the Georges-Dumont Hospital Commission.
“On behalf of the City of Dieppe, I wish to express my deepest sympathies to his family, friends and the entire community”, says Mayor Yvon Lapierre.
The public is invited to sign a book of condolences in the lobby of City Hall, during business hours.
