Passing of former mayor Clarence Cormier
Dieppe ,N.B.— It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Clarence Cormier, former councillor and mayor of Dieppe, former provincial MLA and minister of education.
Mr. Cormier was mayor of Dieppe from 1977 to 1982. Under his leadership, French became the official language of the then-town’s administration and simultaneous translation began being offered during municipal council meetings.
“Mr. Cormier’s contribution was integral to the development of Dieppe’s francophone identity,” said Mayor Jean LeBlanc. “He continued to work toward this goal not only during his term as mayor, but also as a provincial MLA and minister of education.”
Known for his dedication toward his community, Mr. Cormier always stepped up to defend the different causes that were near and dear to his heart, especially regarding the role that public libraries could play in community cultural development.
“On behalf of the City of Dieppe, I wish to express my deepest sympathies to his family, friends and the entire community. Mr. Cormier’s passing is a big loss.”
