Dieppe Firefighters Campaign Against Speeding
The City of Dieppe Fire Department is launching an awareness campaign to remind drivers of the importance of respecting speed limits on all city roads. In the coming weeks, various publications on this theme will be posted on social media and the city’s website.
“As firefighters, we are often called upon to be the first responders to collisions,” says Conrad Landry, Chief of the City of Dieppe Fire Department. “In those types of emergencies, our role is to provide first aid to the injured, secure the area and protect the environment.”
In 2017, firefighters were called to respond to 145 accidents on Dieppe’s roads. A speed assessment on several streets within the municipality revealed that some motorists drive twice as fast as the speed limit of 50 km/h, that is to say over 100 km/h!
“It is important for us to inform residents about adopting safe behaviours, both at home when it comes to fire prevention and on the road to reduce the number of collisions and the severity of injuries,” adds Mr. Landry. “Studies show that at lower speeds, the risk of serious or fatal injuries is much lower.”
With a new school year approaching, along with increased traffic, this campaign is also an opportunity to remind drivers that the speed limit in school zones around Sainte-Thérèse, Lou MacNarin, Anna-Malenfant, Amirault, Antonine-Maillet and Le Marais schools is 30 km/h.
