Closure of Acadie Avenue: update
DIEPPE, N.B. — The City of Dieppe wishes to advise motorists that Acadie Avenue is still closed to through traffic until further notice.
Work undertaken on Saturday, May 18, to replace the Babineau Creek trunk sewer line is aimed at improving the sewer network for the needs of today and tomorrow. This sewer line collects wastewater from adjacent sewer lines before being sent to the Greater Moncton Sewerage Commission’s wastewater treatment facility. The existing sewer line cuts across the Chartersville Marsh – and this is the one we are replacing.
A trench deeper than 20 feet needed to be excavated in order to install the 4.5-metre in diameter sanitary sewer. The depth of the trench and the type of soil found in the marsh area added to this project’s challenges. Pipes for excess rainwater are also found under the road, as well as piping that carries sewage, drinking water and natural gas. In addition, there are three different layers of asphalt adding to the project’s complexity. During the work, we discovered that a number of pipes required repair. Several hours were required to carry out this work in order to ensure that residents continued to receive essential services. In addition, the Chartersville Marsh bordering this area is provincially designated wetlands, meaning that several environmental restrictions came into play.
Since the sanitary sewer is found in the centre of the road, excavation was required on both sides, meaning that opening even one lane for motorists proved to be impossible.
A trench of such depth in an area with unstable ground poses serious safety issues for employees. This is why work could not be undertaken at night, contrary to typical ground-level road construction work such as which occurred on Champlain Street last year. Filling the trench with material suitable for motorists to use during the day and then digging the trench again at night would render the work too lengthy, costly and inefficient. The time required to do the work would be much longer.
Please be assured that everything is being done to complete this project as quickly and as safely as possible. Please note that paving will only be carried out in a few weeks in order to ensure that the ground is well compacted.
